After over a year, our long threatened and previously unnamed CD is here!
“What Have You Done…?” is the third album in which Greg Deer and I have collaborated.
It is different from my previous four albums.
It is sort of a retrospective of over 50 years of songwriting.
Some songs like “We’re Burning Books Tonight!”, “Black Lives Matter!”, and “We’ve Got The Right To Choose!” are new and topical dealing with the current political environment and the dangers of encroaching racism, extremism, and authoritarianism.
“The Sky Came Tumbling Down” and the title song, “What Have You Done…?” both address the results of climate change from diversely personal perspectives. They were written decades apart.
“Mike’s Song” is about losing one of my best friends and favorite songwriters, Mike Pryor, who I accompanied on his decade-long journey through the devastation of Parkinson’s Disease from its onset to its inevitable conclusion. I miss you, my friend.
“Hard Times Behind…Hard Times Ahead” is the result of my years as a labor activist…watching progress…and defeat…and the danger of falling into the trap of cynicism and pessimism.
“She’s A Hero” is an homage to all the women I have met who have escaped abusive relationships and find the inner strength to take charge of their lives and those of their children, while navigating the complexities of single parenthood and the work world.
As in previous albums, I have included two war related songs.
“The Truth Shall Set You Free” was actually the first song I wrote about veterans and PTSD. It dates back to my encounters with Vietnam Veterans, where I first learned about this eternal aftershock of war. The theme has reoccurred in previously recorded songs such as “Where’s My Best Friend Jamie?” and “War Comes Home.”
“We’re All Jews Here!” is a truly heroic story that occurred in a German POW camp in World War II and how a young master sergeant, the ranking NCO, Roddie Edmonds, defied the commandant’s orders to identify and turn over all the Jewish Prisoners for “relocation” at the near cost of his own life
“Where Does Joe The Bartender Go?” begs the question, where does everybody’s favorite crying shoulder go to bring his troubles?
“My Epiphany!” deals with a midlife quest to find the meaning of life…and the unlikely place it’s finally found.
I wrote “Come On In” after conversations with friends who were concurrently dealing with issues related to their trans children and their search for understanding and acceptance. Those who heard it felt a wider message aimed at all so-called “outsiders.” I liked that.
